Interesting how as you get older (in my experience anyway) you become more ballsy. Two years ago I wouldn't dare to tell a child what to do. I lacked directing experience, or was to shy to take control of the situation. Today I am here, screaming telling kids where to stand, what to do, telling them funny jokes, and praising for how good they look on picture-day.
I focus in class/group portraits at Picture-Day. The lighting (mostly if it's indoors) can be tricky, backgrounds can be distracting, getting everybody's attention without a ridiculous big open mouth "OH" or "Wah" face - Parents and teachers would not appreciate that - it's not as easy as it seems. Sometimes you'll get a couple of kids crying, and I'm speaking for elementary school attending children, not pre-schoolers. During a full day of picture-day shoot I need at least one liter nalgene bottle of water to sustain my voice. Today, I didn't have water... nor a lunch break. I survived though. I kept stealing water from Jay, or taking trips between classes to the water fountain by the kids lunchroom.
The most fun is working around Brian Warling, who constantly says something completely appropriate, but with slightly inappropriate notes. It's pretty entertaining. Chad is also a photographer for Picture-day, a colleague... and new friend of Jay and I. He's perhaps the one photo crew person we connect the most with. He has a similar sense of humor, social ideals, and culture taste. We want to hang out with him outside of Picture-Day. Next week is my last gig of the season with Picture-Day, then I'm simply on call.
Two days ago, I almost purchased a flying fare to Columbia for less than $300. I did it 10 minutes after I received the special sale email, then realized that there were no longer return tickets for the same incredibly cheap price, but I bought my first christmas gift online tonight. :)
