The stories behind the photos (Antigua Guatemala).

Antigua Guatemala is one of my favorite cities in the world. I've been to a few major beautiful cities around the world... but Antigua is my favorite. It's like a home to me. I'm after all, Guatemalan. 400 years ago this wonderful town was the first Spanish colonial city in Central America. It was also then, when one of the nearby Volcanoes erupted, causing a tremendous earthquake that destroyed the city. All that was left were countless decaying ruins of catholic churches. So many churches were built because the spaniards were so eager to convert the local indigenous people of Guatemala into catholics, the mayans and their beliefs still overpopulated the land, it was their land.

Because Antigua Guatemala is one of the most visited places in the country, there are always tourists walking their streets. You'll find people carrying shopping green bags from Whole Foods, or even Trader Joe's, or sometimes if you're staying at a hostel you'll hear a couple of german men talk right outside your shower and then quiet down as you begin to run the water (creeps). Due to this population of caucasians, you will see many local indigenous, stand outside, begging for money, or charging you money for taking their picture. Beware, carry a big lens, be sneaky... be a photojournalist.

Candy shops/stands are also very popular on the streets of Antigua Guatemala, or any town with busy streets really. In most towns, near the park, or the market, but in Antigua... they're about anywhere. Amazing how cheap it is, and childhood memories of mine. A blast from the past if you ask me...
